A baseline assessment is designed to measure a student’s understanding of syllabus concepts and standards. The purpose of benchmarking is to offer suggestions and guide the learning process. There are certain concepts with which students need to be familiar if they are to register in a specific level in any educational curriculum. While other curricula might not align perfectly with Cambridge, there are certain concepts that are common to all English programmes of study and it is these that the benchmarking attempts to assess.
The results of the assessment will determine the level at which the student is expected to achieve mastery in the Cambridge programme. Furthermore, the results will ascertain whether any intervention is necessary before placement takes place.
